Well, when you refuse to go with the trend of selling those big brands, it is fairly easy to do that with wines from France as only main producing regions, often with many overpriced wines, feature on the shelves of the last remaining Independent like myself and, well, a few bigger chains that still exist. Well, I am not even mentioning supermarkets as their range of French wines is.... , well, I want to stay polite but not for me.
The problem is with the New World wines. Many people assume Frenchmen hate New World wines, but this is not true. My favourites tend to be from New Zealand and South Africa and a good Pinot Noir from New Zealand will almost have the thumbs up any time against a Burgundy for obvious reasons.
But, as an independent, this is when it starts to get a bit more complicated and I don't really fancy working with the big agencies.
So, our range tends to be extremely limited. But, sometimes, I strike lucky and I have the chance to get approached by a small Family business.
So, welcome to our latest New Zealand addition: Macrocarpa Sauvignon Blanc 2010 from Marlborough. The price is £9.49 per single bottle or £8.54 per bottle when you buy 6. Not bad for this elegant Sauvignon and, always better to support a small grower than an anonymous shareholder who couldn't care less about the product as long as the dollars pours in
